Team Banquet 2010

Posted: November 5, 2010 by Christopher Clark in Social

November 05, 2010 (San Diego, CA) – The 2010 Team Banquet was held at the residence of Head Coach Michael Thiemann on Mission Bay; exclusive to athletes and coaching staff. This annual banquet is held to honor the hardwork, dedication, accomplishments of the team over the course of the year. Stories of team history and lore are traditionally passed around over a lovely sunset dinner. Dinner is followed by a visit to the team trophy room to add new hardware to the display. This year we made room for a large 3rd Place Regional Championship trophy and a very unique, propeller shaped, trophy for our 12th Place National Championship.

November 17, 2010 (San Diego, CA) – The 2010 NCWSA Nationals was our first trip back to the Austin Aquaplex since 2003, when President Corey Donohoe and Captain Megan (O’Dell) Holmes, led the team to our first Nationals appearance since the 80’s. I caught up with Megan to get her reflection on this streak that started with the 2003 team. “I am so proud to see that the team has continued to make it to Nationals every year for the past eight years,” says Megan. “It all started with a group of skiers who loved the sport (and to have fun). We worked hard and were fortunate to have tremendous support from Michael Thiemann and the Aquatic Center to be able to train everyday.”

A very young, Aztec team had a stellar performance at the 2010 Western Regional Championships, placing 3rd and sending the Aztecs to division one of the Collegiate Waterski Nationals in Austin, Texas. More than half of the Aztec team had not previously seen the powerful competition at the national level. The Aztecs showed up at the Austin Aquaplex each morning ready to ski against the top talent in the country. After a long weekend packed full of exciting skiing and extracurricular outings to the local cable park, the Aztecs put on their finest black slacks and black dresses (the gentlemen garnished with a red tie) and the team headed downstairs to the National’s Banquet, were we took home a well deserved 12th place trophy.

October 13, 2010 (Austin, Texas) – Can you believe it has been 32 years since the historic 1979 Nationals, were San Diego State brought home the National Title. This win has become the foundation for our tradition and this year we are sure to that tradition.

Stay tuned as the 32nd Collegiate Water Ski National Championships heat up this Thursday at the Austin Aquaplex in Buda, Texas. Hosted by the University of Texas and the National Collegiate Water Ski Association, the Nationals, which runs through Saturday, includes twelve (12) teams in Division 1 and ten (10) teams in Division 2.

Aztec’s win on home turf

November 8th, 2009 (San Diego, CA) – The Aztecs took their first victory of the year at their practice site in Mission Bay. The Dustin Newell Memorial is hosted each year by the University of California San Diego (UCSD) Waterski Team to honor a fallen UCSD alum. Many teams make the trip to San Diego to get in one last tournament before winter.

The Aztec’s victory was the result of some strong individual performances. The combined, men and women took first in trick skiing and jumping and got a second in the slalom event. Based on the strong performances in the three events the team won the overall title for the event. Individual results for the team included Brandon Barrett winning the men’s slalom event while Kali Szatrowski and Lauren Miley took fifth and sixth in women’s trick skiing and Amy Segall tied for fourth in the jump event. The men’s overall winner was Philip Kani (1st) followed closely by fellow Aztec Eric Fehrs while rookie Szatrowski (5th) took fifth in the women’s overall.

The Aztecs came out strong and end up 12th in the nation. Our woman’s jump team took 6th place which was amazing and too that every single woman was cutting at the ramp trying to edge into the top five. The men’s team took 10th in jump which was a fight because they were going up against professionals skier from all across the world. There will be more info to come when we get a chance to update everything.

We did it we made it to D1. We could not have made it with out all of our team and support from our coaches, friends and family’s. We want to wish Nick Detrick a fast recovery for putting his body in harms way to help put the team into the last D1 spot.

Live Updates @ Western Regional Championships

Coach Chris Clark here with the morning recap going into day two of the 2009 Western Regional Championships.

The Aztecs started off strong Mens Slalom with the men’s team taking 4th place. All five guys ran their opener to keep us competitive. Rookie, first round skier, Mike Hoskins, set the tone with a personal best by running the course for the first time in a tournament. Team Captain, Brandon Barrett, finished it out in round 5 with a 4.5 @ 35 off to individually place 4th in mens slalom.

The tables turned a little bit during women’s slalom. Personal best performances by Bre Holm and rookie Lauren Miley were just short of spectacular as they both were penalized for skiing over the inside of one buoy. It was Amy Segall who stepped up for the lady Aztecs with a fine opening pass and a few more buoys on top of that. A strong attempt wasn’t strong enough for the competition and the overall team ranking dropped to 7th place heading into the Trick event.

With the weakest event behind them the Aztecs knew that NOW was their last chance to make a run at the top five. The men and women both went out and did their usual trick runs from practice. The men ended up 4th in the event with highlight performances by Vice President, Eric Fehrs and Brandon Barrett. Eric stood up his entire trick run and tricked far past the 20 second limit, a very strong statement in the clutch. Brandon Barrett came off the bench last minute to replace and ineligible tricker and put up close to 500 points. The men tricked very well but it was the womens trick team that really brought us home.

The women stepped up big time taking 2nd place in trick behind Arizona State. Rookie show skier Kali Szatrowski, led the team with a score of 380 points. Right behind her was Veteran and former team President, Bree Holm with a score of 360 points. Jenna Davenport (290 points), Lauren Miley (225 points), and Heidi Hansen (200 points) were no match for the competition.

The Aztecs are sitting in a comfortable lead going into the Jump event. Jump is SDSU’s strongest event on both the men and women sides. In order to honor the National Ranking and make a run for division one the Aztecs need to jump one position higher into 3rd place.

We deeply appreciate your texts and phone calls of encouragement and congratulations. Go Aztecs!

Our mighty Aztec skiers preformed at the utmost of there ability putting both men’s and woman’s team in second place in all three events, thus landing us in second over all. Everyone from Fall Opener made improvements in there scores which is all we can ask for. If we keep up these great strides of progress over the next two week I know that we will make a great showing at Regoinals. I will update this more when the scores are released.

@ CSC “Sky Lake Classic” 2009

The season opener for the western region took place at Sky Lake in Durham, California hosted by Chico State. The official scorebook should be in later this evening but we’ll do a quick recap from the performance side. The team took 3rd overall.

The Aztec Men’s Team had a great warm up tournament led by team captain Brandon Barrett, putting up large scores in slalom (3.5 @ 35 off) and jump (97 feet). The real improvement, however, was the men’s trick team. Traditionally the weakest event for the men’s team is the trick event. In the off season, Coach Connie Morris put added emphasis on this event. The result was the men’s trick team placing 2nd Overall with individual placements of 5th (Eric Fehrs), 6th (Phil Kani), and 7th (Nick Detrick).

The Woman’s Team that was at Chico dominated jump. They took second in jump with newbie jumpers which shows how much raw talent our new girls have. Kali Szatrowski to 5th place in jump with a 46 foot jump and now looking to start cutting at the ramp so I know her distance will grow quickly. Jenna Davenport took 10th place and she did it landing three jumps in a row. Luaren Miley took 13th place and would have been in the top ten if she had landed her third jump which would have been 42 feet but was unable to ride it away.

To everyone who made it to Chico I want to say great job and keep up the good work.
NEXT EVENT: The will be competing next weekend at Firebird Raceway Tempe, Arizona. Stay tuned for updates!
